The winners of the Women’s Euros host the Women’s World Cup holders on Friday, as England take on the United States in a keenly-anticipated friendly at a sell-out Wembley. In the Lionesses’ first game at the stadium since beating Germany there to lift the European title in July, the visit of the USWNT represents a chance for England to measure their progress against the globe’s top-ranked national team, as they step up their preparations for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next summer. Sarina Wiegman’s side, who have risen to fourth in the FIFA world rankings, have not lost in the Dutchwoman’s 22 games in charge; however, that run will be put to the test against a team that itself is undefeated in 21 matches - and has made a habit of beating the English in the past.

USWNT have won 12 out of 18 against England

So far, England and the USWNT have met 18 times in all competitions, with the Stars and Stripes winning 12. There have been two draws, and England have managed four victories. The sides’ most recent meeting came at the SheBelieves Cup in March 2020, when goals by Christen Press and Carli Lloyd earned the USWNT a 2-0 win in Orlando, Florida.

That clash was the Americans’ fourth game in a row without defeat to England - a streak that also included victory over the English in a memorable semi-final at the 2019 World Cup in France. At Lyon’s Groupama Stadium, the US prevailed 2-1 courtesy of strikes by Press and Alex Morgan, who stirred up controversy in the UK media with her ‘sipping-tea’ goal celebration. Having pegged the USWNT back once through Ellen White, England had the chance to level for a second time when they were awarded a penalty with six minutes to go, but captain Steph Houghton’s kick was saved by Alyssa Naeher, and the USWNT progressed to the final - where they beat the Netherlands to lift a record fourth world crown. The US also eliminated England from the 2007 World Cup, goals by Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx and Kristine Lilly securing a 3-0 quarter-final win in China.

The USWNT last lost to England in a SheBelieves Cup tie in 2017, an 89th-minute goal by Ellen White giving the Lionesses a 1-0 triumph in Harrison, New Jersey. Six years before then, the English had earned their first win over the USWNT since 1988, in what was one of just two meetings that have been held between the teams in England. In an April 2011 matchup at London’s Brisbane Road, Jess Clarke and Rachel Yankey scored to earn the hosts a 2-1 victory over the Americans, who replied through Megan Rapinoe. England’s only other home clash with the US came four years later, in 2015, the visitors prevailing 1-0 in Milton Keynes.
