How much prize money will Manchester City earn for winning the Premier League?

They may have had to rely on three late goals in their 38th and final game of the season to clinch the title, but how much do they get for it?

What a finale to the 2021/22 season. As we came into the last game of the season for each club there was still so much to decide, most notably who would be crowned champions of England. Manchester City and Liverpool have been far and away the best two sides in the Premier League - some would say the world - and going into the final seconds of both games, against Aston Villa and Wolves respectively, the destination of the title was still in the balance.

As it turned out, Pep Guardiola’s sky blue machine would take another title, the fourth in five seasons, and many have been asking if there are massive financial rewards for doing so. The answer in most people’s books is a clear ‘yes’, however, for a state-owned club like City, extremely deep pockets means it’s a drop of oil in the ocean to their overall wealth.

How much for winning the Premier League 2021/22?

For their first placed finish, the Etihad club collect a tidy enough £44 million ($54.4 million) from the Premier League. It’s a sliding scale from there down £38.8 million ($40 million) to the team that finish rock bottom, who take an extra £2.2 million ($2.7 million) as they trundle down to the Championship.

Of course, despite these sums not changing too much in the world of sheikhs or oligarchs, the more modest clubs can really make their fortunes rise by just ending the season one place higher, a factor that can keep players from thinking of the beach before the final whistle blows.

Here are the payments made for each finishing position in the league:

  • 1st £44 million ($54.4 million)
  • 2nd £41.8 million ($51.7 million)
  • 3rd £39.6 million ($49 million)
  • 4th £37.4 million ($46.3 million)
  • 5th £35.2 million ($43.6 million)
  • 6th £33 million ($40.8 million)
  • 7th £30.8 million ($38.1 million)
  • 8th £28.6 million ($35.4 million)
  • 9th £26.4 million ($32.7 million)
  • 10th £24.2 million ($29.9 million)
  • 11th £22 million ($27.2 million)
  • 12th £19.8 million ($24.5 million)
  • 13th £17.6 million ($21.8 million)
  • 14th £15.4 million ($19.1 million)
  • 15th £13.2 million ($16.3 million)
