It would be something of an understatement to say that Inter Miami’s signing of Lionel Messi had made a splash in Major League Soccer and beyond. The former Barcelona superstar is expected to make his debut for the club in the Leagues Cup clash against Liga MX side Cruz Azul next month...which was news to one particular fan.

Messi fan hits the headlines at Subaru Park

The Herons’ torrid start to the 2023 season continued on Saturday as they were thumped 4-1 by Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. While it wasn’t much of a contest on the field, a sign made and held up by one supporter in the stands caught the attention off it.

“I travelled 1,200 miles to see the GOAT”, it read, the fan in question clearly unaware that Messi is currently taking a short vacation in his native Argentina and, in fact, hasn’t even been officially unveiled by Inter Miami, which is expected to happen in the coming days.

The Union clocked what was going on and kindly shared a clip of the supporter throwing his sign away in disgust after failing to spot Messi out on the field (assuming he thinks it is the Argentinian who is the greatest of all time and not, for instance, Jean Mota, who missed the game through injury).

Busquests joins Messi in Miami for new challenge

The Florida side also announced on Saturday that Sergio Busquets would be joining former Barcelona teammate Messi at DRV PNK Stadium. Throughout their careers, the pair have been used to winning titles but they will initially face a rather different challenge in Miami, with David Beckham’s team bottom of the Eastern Conference having taken just 15 points from 18 games.
