Iran wants no more politics

The most anticipated press conference of World Cup 2026 before the start of the tournament was Iran’s.

Team Melli has been through almost everything in the lead-up to the competition: a last-minute relocation of its training base from Tucson to Tijuana, a ban preventing 15 team officials from entering the United States, and a requirement to return to Mexico after every match played on U.S. soil, adding extra travel and fatigue. Yet Iran has chosen to approach the tournament with a positive attitude. It’s a World Cup, and there is little time for complaints or regrets.

“We are here to play soccer. We are here to play and to represent the people of Iran and the Iranian diaspora. We are not political people. Soccer is separate from politics. We respect everyone,” Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei said during a pre-match press conference at Los Angeles Stadium, less than 24 hours before his team’s World Cup opener against New Zealand.

Iran playing in the US but staying in Tijuana

Iran’s journey remained difficult right up to the eve of its debut. The team left Tijuana at 10 a.m. and did not arrive at its hotel in Los Angeles until 3 p.m. local time. Ghalenoei, however, appeared determined to focus on the task ahead.

“The delay was not our fault. It was a long trip. I want to say that we respect all Iranians. We came here to play soccer. Soccer can always unite different groups. We want to show that unity and bring happiness to all Iranians,” he said.

“We expected to train earlier. We arrived late and have not had time to adjust, but I know our players are determined to do their best for the great nation of Iran.”

As the press conference continued, Ghalenoei became more outspoken about the challenges facing his team.

“Our camp was moved twice. Of course it affects us. I would like to thank the wonderful people of Mexico. We are used to creating opportunities out of adversity. These conditions negatively affect the spirit of soccer. They have affected our tactical preparations, but I have done the best I could.”

The coach also confirmed that Team Melli must return to Tijuana after Monday night’s match and will not be allowed to stay overnight in Los Angeles.

“It goes against FIFA’s message”

Iran star Mehdi Taremi, formerly of Inter Milan, also tried to avoid political controversy, but he did not leave without making a pointed remark.

“It wasn’t only us. Many countries have had visa issues and changes to their training camps. We all feel like we’ve been waiting for the World Cup. There have been detentions and several incidents. It goes against FIFA’s message. This is soccer. That’s how I feel,” Taremi said.

“I believe this World Cup can provide a message of hope for the future.”

His comments came as President Donald Trump’s administration announced a peace agreement with the Islamic Republic following a conflict that began on Feb. 28.

The press conference ended with a subtle contrast between the coach and his star player. While Ghalenoei appreciated questions about the broader circumstances facing Iran, Taremi expressed frustration that so few focused on the game itself.

“No one asked about soccer,” Taremi said. “We’re going to play against a good New Zealand team and I hope we can win. We respect them. I hope New Zealand has the same attitude.”

Ghalenoei closed the session on a different note.

“Thank you all, because your questions were also technical and highlighted the situation in our country. I want to express that soccer can unite cultures and nations.”
