Canada have their biggest match in the history of their soccer federation this afternoon from Houston. There was some concern surrounding the fitness of their captain, Alphonso Davies, coming into this match, but manager Jesse Marsch was given a big boost ahead of his team’s match against Morocco.

Davies a go for round of 16

The Canada captain has been dealing with a hamstring injury since well before the start of this World Cup. He missed Bayern Munich´s final three matches of their domestic season and has seen very little action in this World Cup.

After making his first appearance in this tournament in the round of 32 win over South Africa, he is reportedly fully fit ahead of the biggest match in Canadian soccer history. He played just 15 minutes off the bench against the Bafana Bafana, and was on the pitch for Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage time winner that pushed this side to the round of 16.

It has already been a historic tournament for the co-host nation of Canada. It is just their third trip to the World Cup, and they won their first ever match in this competition when the destroyed Qatar 6-0 on their home soil. That win pushed them through the group stages, and set up their first ever appearance in a knockout match.

Cap 60 coming for Davies

Now the co-hosts, who will be playing the rest of the tournament away from their home soil, look to cash in on another historic performance. They have a date with Morocco from Houston for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Canada know this will be their toughest test of the tournament. Morocco went to the semifinals in the last World Cup in Qatar and are currently ranked sixth in the FIFA World Rankings. They will need all the help they can get and the return of Davies to full fitness is a huge plus coming into this match.

Davies has been with Bayern Munich since 2019 and in that time has won seven Bundesliga titles, a Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Now he is setting his sights on international success with Canada. Davies debuted for Canada´s senior team in 2017 and since then has made 59 appearances, scoring 15 goals for his country.
