Update:

Ismaël Koné is unavailable for Canada’s World Cup 2026 round of 16 clash against Morocco after suffering a broken leg during the group stage.

The midfielder sustained fractures to his tibia and fibula during Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar when he was caught by a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. Koné underwent emergency surgery shortly afterwards, bringing his tournament to an immediate end, while Madibo was later handed a five-match suspension for the tackle. Despite the devastating injury, the 24-year-old has remained with the squad throughout Canada’s historic World Cup run.

Koné’s absence quickly became one of the defining stories of Canada’s campaign. After Jesse Marsch’s squad rallied around their injured teammate, supporters made sure he remained at the heart of the team’s journey.

Why minute 8 now means more to Canada fans at World Cup

Ahead of Canada’s knockout-stage match against Switzerland, the national team’s official supporters’ group, The Voyageurs, launched a campaign to print 3,000 posters bearing Koné’s No. 8 shirt. The initiative quickly gathered momentum, with Inter Toronto donating another 4,000 posters and Vancouver FC providing a further 4,000, meaning 11,000 No. 8 cards were handed out to fans before kick-off.

In the eighth minute of the match, supporters throughout BC Place raised the posters and chanted Koné’s name in a powerful tribute to one of Canada’s brightest young stars. Although unable to help on the field, he had become a symbol of the team’s unity and resilience.

Koné later admitted in a letter published by The Players’ Tribune that his biggest disappointment was not being able to help Canada during the country’s biggest footballing moment.

“I wasn’t worried about myself... I’ll do my rehab, then I’ll come back better than I ever was.”

The midfielder also thanked supporters for the overwhelming messages of encouragement he has received since the injury, saying the response had helped him through the toughest period of his career.

Canada now face Morocco without one of Marsch’s first-choice midfielders. Koné’s ability to carry the ball through midfield and break opposition lines has been a major part of Canada’s development, but his teammates will hope to continue their remarkable tournament and book a place in the World Cup quarterfinals.
