Josh Sargent and Norwich relegated from Premier League to Championship
The Canaries lost 2-0 to Aston Villa on Saturday and are officially the first team to be relegated from the Premier League this season.
With five games left in the 2021/22 Premier League season, Norwich City have become the first team to be relegated. The Canaries lost 2-0 to Aston Villa on Saturday at Villa Park and will have to play in the Championship next campaign after a disastrous year in England’s top flight.
“Unfortunately, over the season, our performances haven’t been good enough,” Norwich’s head coach Dean Smith said. “We’ve lacked the quality required in this league. My reaction is bitter disappointment and I take full responsibility. Over the last four or five weeks there’s probably been an inevitability about it.
“We haven’t improved enough to stay in the league but there’s certainly a lot to work with. There’s some really good players at this football club that I think can get better, but they’ve found the step up to the Premier League a bit hard.”
Sargent couldn’t help the team avoid relegation
Norwich sits at the bottom of the Premier League standings with 21 points and a record of five wins, six draws and 23 defeats. Josh Sargent arrived at the Canaries this season, but had a hard time adapting to the Premier League and earning a starting role.
The United States international has scored two goals and provided one assist in 26 appearances. Sargent missed the last three games due to an ankle injury, but returned on Saturday and played 14 minutes in the defeat against Villa.
