Following their loss in the final of the 2023 Concacaf Champions League against Liga MX’s Club León, Los Angeles FC, led by Carlos Vela, resumed their participation in the ongoing MLS season. Despite putting in a strong performance, the Black & Golds were unable to secure a victory against Atlanta United, settling instead for a tie.

Unfortunately for them, the game also saw Mexican star Vela miss from the penalty spot, and a return to winning ways will have to wait.

Since their victory over the San José Earthquakes in the North American league on May 20, the team led by Steve Cherundolo has been unable to secure a win. Following that triumph, they suffered elimination from the US Open Cup at the hands of LA Galaxy, fielding an alternate lineup. Additionally, they experienced a painful defeat in the Concacaf Champions League final against León, marking their second consecutive loss in the final of the tournament.

Vela did not start in LAFC’s lineup but came on as a substitute in the second half, replacing Mateusz Bogusz. In the 74th minute, a penalty was awarded in favor of the Black & Gold, but the experienced Mexican forward was unable to convert past Brad Guzan.

Another interesting aspect is that the Atlanta United goalkeeper, who was part of the United States national team for a considerable time, became the headline act after stopping Vela’s penalty not once but twice. The spot kick had to be retaken for an infringement.

Next challenge: Héctor Herrera vs. Carlos Vela

LAFC’s upcoming match will be an away game against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, June 10. Despite the current struggles faced by the Californian team, this match promises much.

The Black & Golds are eager to bounce back and secure a victory to break their winless streak, aiming to climb the ranks and contend for the top position in the Western Conference. On the other hand, Houston has its sights set on a spot in the playoff zone, making the game even more significant for them.
