The 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup has not even finished its round of 16, yet anticipation is already building around a potential quarterfinal showdown between Club América and Inter Miami.

If it happens, the matchup would be historic. It would mark the first official meeting between the two clubs and could also be the first time Lionel Messi plays a competitive match in Mexico City. Questions remain about the venue, with the game possibly held at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes or at the newly renamed Estadio Banorte.

América grabs early advantage in the race to the quarterfinals

Without getting ahead of the results, the first-leg matches have already given América a slight edge. Under Concacaf’s knockout rules, every result can significantly influence how the bracket unfolds.

The Mexico City giants earned a narrow but valuable victory over Philadelphia Union. Meanwhile, Inter Miami played to a scoreless draw on the road at GEODIS Park against Nashville SC.

That stalemate in Nashville could ultimately work in América’s favor.

Why the result matters

Concacaf’s rules establish an overall ranking table beginning in the round of 16. The better-seeded team in each quarterfinal matchup hosts the decisive second leg.

At the moment, that system gives América the upper hand over Inter Miami. The advantage is not fully secured yet, however.

To guarantee hosting the second leg of a potential quarterfinal, América must defeat Philadelphia again in the return match. If they do, they would play the decisive 90 minutes at home in the next round, regardless of whether Inter Miami or Nashville advances.

Key dates for the next round

Both round-of-16 ties, América vs. Philadelphia and Inter Miami vs. Nashville, will play their second legs on March 18.

Quarterfinals in the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup are scheduled for April 7–9 for the first legs and April 14–16 for the return matches.

If results fall the right way, the tournament could soon deliver a blockbuster moment: Messi stepping onto the field in Mexico City for the first time in an official club match.
