Londres (Inglaterra) Update:

A turbulent summer is looming at Anfield — maybe even a traumatic one. With club legends Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already confirmed to be leaving after nine seasons, the defending Premier League champions will likely be looking to bring in a new manager.

The coach who takes over will have a job on their hands - the not insignificant undertaking of completely overhauling the squad.

After a disastrous 2025–26 campaign, Arne Slot’s future is anything but secure. The Dutchman lost the fans a while ago - and perhaps the players too. Tactically, Liverpool are a mess. Slot’s ‘suck-it-and-see’ approach - tinkering with the line-up week-in week-out, playing midfielders as full-backs, overlooking players, too afraid to drop under-performers... no wonder people are unhappy.

It just hasn’t worked out for Slot who, it must be said, hasn’t been helped by an injury crisis. Meanwhile, two Spanish coaches Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola will be available and looking for employment this summer.

But the potential departure that may hit Liverpool fans the hardest is Alexis Mac Allister — a player many expected to be central to the club’s rebuild.

According to The Telegraph, the 27‑year‑old Argentine midfielder is one of nine players who could leave Liverpool in this summer’s transfer window. Losing him would be a major blow for the Reds — and at the same time, a golden opportunity for clubs like Real Madrid, who have been linked to him multiple times.

Mac Allister, signed in 2023 for roughly $43 million, has long been on Madrid’s radar.

“A surprise name, perhaps, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he could be used to finance the next phase of the rebuild. The Argentine has two years left on his contract, there have not been renewal talks yet and his form has dipped this season. Clubs in Europe are interested in him,” the outlet reports.

Mac Allister’s current deal runs through 2028, and as his father and agent, Carlos Mac Allister, recently confirmed on Win Win, “there are no negotiations with Liverpool to renew his contract.”

Just a year ago, in April 2025, when asked about Real Madrid’s interest, the elder Mac Allister brushed it off, saying there was “nothing to comment on” and that Alexis was “very happy at Liverpool.” And it made sense — Liverpool was on the verge of winning the 2025–26 Premier League title. But the club’s situation has changed dramatically since then.

It’s important to respect the club he plays for, so any comment from us would be unnecessary. He has a contract until 2028, he’s happy there, and we hope he stays,” he said at the time.

If Mac Allister leaves, Real Madrid will be first in line

Should Mac Allister decide to move on after three seasons at Anfield, he won’t be short on suitors — and Real Madrid is expected to be among the first to knock on his door.

Beyond their long‑standing interest dating back to his Brighton days, Madrid needs a midfielder with his profile:

  • a playmaker,
  • a tempo‑setter,
  • a true organizing force in the middle of the pitch.

In short, the kind of player who can finally give structure to Madrid’s midfield. And the search for that profile has been underway for a while.

Madrid has also scouted Rodri Hernández, Enzo Fernández, Kees Smit, and Adam Wharton as potential reinforcements. But Mac Allister checks every box — and if the opportunity arises, Madrid is expected to move aggressively.

Before any decision is made, the Argentine still has two major tasks ahead:

  1. securing Liverpool’s spot in next season’s Champions League, and
  2. competing with Argentina at this summer’s World Cup.

After that, once the transfer window opens, anything can happen. One thing is for certain, after last summer’s big spend, Liverpool are going to need to sell a few of their first teamers to fund any rebuild.
