Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat-tricks to fire champions Manchester City to a rampant 6-3 thrashing of local rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

City put United to the sword in a ruthless display of attacking football in the first half at the Etihad Stadium, as the visitors, who had won their last four leagues games, were blown away by the champions.

The defeat for Ten Hag’s men ended United’s four-match winning streak in the league with the Old Trafford side back in action today for the first time since beating Arsenal on 4 September and face a manic schedule of nine matches in October.

Manchester derby: history

The Manchester giants teams have played 188 matches in all competitions, United winning 77, City 58, and the remaining 53 having been drawn. Amongst the most successful clubs in English football, between them they have won 95 honours: 66 for Manchester United and 29 for Manchester City.

Before Sunday’s meeting, City have held the upper hand in recent meetings, winning three, drawing once and slipping up to the Red Devils in March 2021 where goals from Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw saw United run out 0-2 winners at the Etihad Stadium.
