Things are going from bad to worse for Manchester United and Erik Ten Hag at the moment. The Red Devils have lost eight of their first 15 matches in 2023-24, making it their worst start to a season in 61 years. A spate of injuries hasn’t helped and now they can add former Real Madrid star Casemiro to their list of casualties once again.

Casemiro suffers hamstring issue on United return

United released a statement on Friday revealing the Brazilian would be “out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury suffered during our Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday.” The midfielder had already sat out his team’s three previous matches - against Sheffield United, Copenhagen and Manchester City - but made his return from a knock in the midweek cup loss, only to be withdrawn at half time.

Which games could the Brazil midfielder miss?

Five of the Red Devils’ next six matches are away from Old Trafford, with Champions League trips to Copenhagen (8 November) and Galatasaray (29 November) sandwiched between Premier League games at Fulham (4 November), Everton (26 November) and Newcastle (2 December). Ten Hag’s side will also host Luton Town on 11 November.

Manchester United defeated the Magpies at Wembley to win the Carabao Cup last season, with Casemiro scoring the opening goal in the final. Before Wednesday, the 31-year-old hadn’t featured for his club since also coming off at half time, when United were a goal down, in the win over Brentford on 7 October, missing three fixtures after returning from South America, where he played twice for Brazil during the international break.

Former Real Madrid star not immune to Red Devils criticism

“The Brazilian midfielder was withdrawn at half-time due to the issue, and subsequent assessment has revealed a strain that will keep him out for a number of weeks,” concludes United’s statement. Despite Casemiro’s incredible pedigree and superb performances in his first season in the Premier League, he has been a shadow of his usual self in the first few months of the current campaign. Although he has scored four goals and set up another in 12 matches, all of which he has started, the former Madrid man has, like the majority of his teammates, received plenty of criticism for his on-field displays.
