Martín to win Clausura 2023 top-scorer award: who was the last Mexican to do it, and when?

Set to come first in the Clausura 2023 goal charts, Henry Martín will end a run of Liga MX tournaments without a Mexican top scorer.

Striker Henry Martín’s prolific form for Club América is giving fans of Las Águilas plenty of reason to dream of a title win in the Clausura 2023 tournament. What’s more, his exploits are about to see him end a barren run for Mexican goalscorers in the Liga MX.

Martín beats Quiñones to Clausura 2023 award

Martín is poised to finish the regular season as the league’s top scorer - the first time in almost four years that a homegrown player has earned the distinction.

With 14 goals, the 30-year-old leads the way ahead of Colombian Julián Quiñones (Atlas, 12), the Argentina-born Mexican Rogelio Funes Mori (Monterrey, nine) and Argentinian Juan Ignacio Dinenno (Pumas, eight).

Pulido the last Mexican to lead the goal charts

The Apertura 2019 is the most recent tournament in which a Mexican finished the league phase as leading marksman.

Shortly before leaving for MLS team Sporting Kansas City, Alan Pulido scored 12 times for Chivas Guadalajara to rank as the league’s joint-most productive forward, alongside Necaxa’s Argentinian striker Mauro Quiroga.

Such has been the recent foreign dominance of the Liga MX’s goal charts that Pulido was the first Mexican top scorer since Ángel Reyna some eight years earlier. Reyna netted 13 times for América in the Clausura 2011.
