It was the Messi and Mbappé show at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday night as the pair were hugely instrumental in PSG’s 0-3 win over Olympique Marseille.

Messi bagged his 700th club goal and the Frenchman scored a brace, provided an assist and equaled Edinson Cavani’s record for goals for PSG.

All the ingredients were in place pre-game for the biggest match in the Ligue 1 calendar with added spice following Marseille’s win over PSG in the French Cup round of 16 and a win for the side from south coast would have reignited the Ligue 1 title race.

PSG lost three games in a row at the beginning of the month and Mbappé was absent for two of these with the Parisian giants buoyed by his presence alone and opened the scoring in the 25th minute taking advantage of an extraordinary pass from Messi, as he deceived Pau López to make it 0-1. Just four minutes the side from the capital doubled their lead as Mbappe turned provider and put the ball on a plate for the striker from Rosario to tap home.

PSG put the contest to bed shortly before the hour mark as Mbappe made it 0-3 on the night to draw level with Edinson Cavani as PSG top marksman.

The France international has scored a phenomenal 200 goals in 247 games with PSG. It took Cavani 301 games in over seven years at the capital club to break the previous record.

Mbappé is now set to become PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer. He has also scored at least two goals in 50 games for the Ligue 1 outfit, a feat that is also a club record.
