Despite a busy summer and several major arrivals, the club’s manager still believes key pieces are missing from the squad.

Mourinho makes his Real Madrid transfer demands clear: two positions need filled
The activity at Valdebebas remains relentless. After securing the arrivals of Cucurella, Konaté and Dumfries to strengthen the back line, along with Bernardo Silva in attack, Real Madrid is now working to fulfill José Mourinho’s next priorities. The Portuguese manager considers the signing of another center back and a dynamic central midfielder essential before the transfer window closes.
For the defensive role, three names are under consideration: Ruben Dias, Bastoni and Schlotterbeck. In midfield, the shortlist currently includes Mateus Fernandes and Enzo Fernández.
Mourinho wants another center back
Mourinho’s original plan was to recruit a player capable of operating both as a center back and as a left back, with Gvardiol and Calafiori among the profiles being monitored. However, the opportunity to sign Cucurella emerged unexpectedly, and Madrid moved quickly to complete a deal worth approximately $58 million (€50 million).

That signing has not altered Mourinho’s assessment of the squad. The coach remains convinced that another central defender is needed, given that Antonio Rüdiger is entering the latter stages of his career, Dean Huijsen is still at the beginning of his development, and Éder Militão’s recent injury record continues to raise concerns.
The manager’s preferred option is Ruben Dias. Madrid explored a move for the Portuguese defender before finalizing Konaté’s arrival, and a deal appeared feasible at the time. According to sources familiar with the situation, however, bringing him to the Spanish capital is now virtually impossible because Manchester City has no intention of selling.
Another player admired by Mourinho is Bastoni of Inter Milan. Yet the Italian international is one of the club’s most sought-after assets, and his reported asking price of around $81 million (€70 million) is viewed as excessive.
In that context, Schlotterbeck appears to be the most realistic target. As previously reported by AS, the German defender’s latest contract renewal with Borussia Dortmund included a release clause worth approximately $58 million (€50 million). Madrid also enjoys an excellent relationship with the German club, potentially smoothing negotiations.
Madrid’s search for a midfield leader
In midfield, Mourinho continues to push for a box-to-box player capable of covering significant ground while also influencing the team’s build-up play.
His ideal candidate is Enzo Fernández, but Chelsea hopes to recover a large portion of the more than $139 million (€120 million) it spent to sign him in 2023. While Chelsea has shown a willingness to sell players, as demonstrated by Cucurella’s departure, new manager Xabi Alonso reportedly views the Argentine as a crucial component of his plans.

Madrid has simultaneously been working on a move for Mateus Fernandes. At just 21 years old, the Portuguese midfielder has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in his country. His omission from Portugal’s World Cup squad generated considerable debate.
West Ham United’s relegation has placed him firmly on the market, although Madrid faces strong competition from Manchester United. The London club is reportedly seeking around $93 million (€80 million) for the midfielder.
Fernandes is represented by Jorge Mendes, who also manages Mourinho and Bernardo Silva. That relationship could prove advantageous for Madrid. However, Mendes also maintains strong ties with Manchester United, where he has recently facilitated deals involving Yoro and Ugarte.
Another name emerges: Bouaddi
With much of the summer’s business already completed, Madrid intends to proceed more cautiously regarding the midfield position. Club officials view the role as fundamental to the team’s future structure, making the decision especially important.
The World Cup could play a significant role in determining the final choice. One additional name has already surfaced in discussions: Moroccan midfielder Bouaddi, who impressed against Brazil.
The Lille player had already been identified by Madrid’s scouting department months ago after receiving highly favorable evaluations from chief scout Juni Calafat. As a result, the club had been closely monitoring his progress long before his recent rise to prominence.
