Messi and his renewal at Inter Miami

Estados Unidos Update:

Lionel Messi remains the most important voice at Inter Miami, and right now, that voice is calling for calm and togetherness. The Argentine star and his Fort Lauderdale-based team are far from their peak at this point in the North American season, but there’s no time to dwell on missteps – the Club World Cup is fast approaching.

All of this unfolds amid continued uncertainty around the legendary No 10’s contract extension, adding another layer of intrigue.

After Inter Miami’s painful loss to Orlando City on Sunday Night Soccer in the 2025 Major League Soccer season, the captain stopped to speak with Apple TV. “We have to keep going – it’s a difficult moment, but we’re going to get through it together,” Messi said.

“Now is when we’ll find out if we’re really a team – in the tough times. Because when everything’s going well, it’s easy. But it’s in moments like this when we have to be more united than ever. We need to be a true team and push through. I think we have what it takes, so now we’ll focus on what’s coming and prepare for the match against Philadelphia Union.”

Before wrapping up the brief interview, journalist Michele Giannone took the opportunity to ask whether there were any updates regarding Messi’s renewal. The legendary forward smiled and replied simply: “No.” While Jordi Alba’s extension through 2027 has already been confirmed, it’s expected that Messi will also re-sign, potentially through 2026.

What’s next for Messi and Inter Miami?

Next up in MLS, Inter Miami will head to Subaru Park to take on Philadelphia Union – the current Eastern Conference leaders with 29 points. The game will also be a chance to settle the score: Inter Miami beat them 2–1 back in late March at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

After that trip, the south Florida club will face CF Montréal on Wednesday, May 28, followed by a clash with Columbus Crew on Saturday, May 31. Then comes a break for the upcoming FIFA international window. On Saturday, June 14, Inter Miami will make their Club World Cup debut against Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly.

During the international pause, Messi is expected to join the Argentina squad for World Cup qualifiers against Chile (Thursday, June 5) and Colombia (Tuesday, June 10).
