Mixed reactions follow Xavi Simons Instagram post after Tottenham draw
Tottenham gave up a stoppage time equalizer to Brighton on Saturday afternoon, furthering their frustrations in what could be a disastrous relegation campaign.

Times are tough and emotions are running high in Tottenham these days. Surely by this point in the season you have heard of the troubles the North London club are currently facing. There is not much to celebrate if you’re a Spurs fan or player, but midfielder Xavi Simons went to social media and posted a foto from the 2-2 draw to Brighton, and the reactions were mixed.
The slump continues
Saturday was Roberto De Zerbi’s second match on the touchline, but even the Italian hasn’t been able to turn things around for a club that is facing a historic relegation. A stoppage time goal scored by Brighton turned a much needed three points into a share of the spoils for Spurs.
Fans left Tottenham Stadium understandably disappointed that they have had to suffer through yet another week without a win. It’s a slump that stretches back to before New Year’s Eve, and the tally is now 15 Premier League matches without a win.
With the frustration at a boiling point for many Spurs fans, they returned home only to see one of their players posting on Instagram, in a seemingly celebratory fashion. Xavi Simons posted a picture of him celebrating the goal that put Tottenham up 2-1 in the 77th minute only to see that lead disappear in the final seconds of Saturday’s match.
Fans rip Simons
The caption did say, “We will NOT stop fighting. Crowd was amazing today #COYS” so there was an acknowledgment to the urgency of the situation, but the timing and the picture didn’t exactly match the tone of how things are going at the club. Fans and followers of Simons were quick to criticize the decision.
Fans in the comments section did not hold back. One asked, “Is this dude celebrating a 2-2 while fighting relegation?” Another said, “Crazy celebration.” There were others who supported the post and encouraged Simons and Tottenham to continue to fight.
Currently, Spurs are in 18th, with 31 points after 33 matches. They trail West Ham by a point, and Nottingham Forest by two point but both clubs have a match in hand. Next week Tottenham will take on last placed Wolves, desperate to end the winless streak in the Premier League.
