MLS drifts away for Gignac

At 40 years old, retirement still does not seem to be an option for legendary Tigres forward André-Pierre Gignac. According to recent rumours, he has even been linked with MLS, a league that, since Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami, has become known for signing world-class players such as Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Hugo Lloris and, most recently, Antoine Griezmann, who is set to leave Atlético de Madrid to begin a new chapter in the United States.

Gignac’s contract expires at the end of June, meaning he could soon bring an end to his successful spell with the feline side. During his time at Tigres, he has recorded 222 goals and 57 assists in 444 appearances. He still has the Concacaf Champions Cup final ahead of him, giving him one last opportunity to leave on an even higher note if he plays, scores, or helps the club lift the international title.

With Tigres, Gignac has won 12 official titles: five Liga MX championships, one Concacaf Champions League, four Campeón de Campeones trophies and two Campeones Cups. Since joining the club in July 2015, more than a decade ago, he has built an almost untouchable legacy and established himself as a true legend of the institution.

Rumours had linked Gignac with MLS side Orlando City, where he would have reunited with fellow Frenchman Griezmann. However, reports now suggest that the move will not happen and that, although the striker’s next destination could still be in American football, it will not be in Florida.

MLS insider Tom Bogert addressed the speculation directly: “Rumors suggesting Orlando City are about to sign Tigres legend Andre-Pierre Gignac (40) are completely false, sources say” he wrote on social media.

For now, fans will have to wait and see where one of the biggest icons in Mexican football heads next.
