It was only a matter of time. After failing to find the target in both of the last two games (Fulham and Sheffield United), Mohamed Salah finally brought up his 200th goal for Liverpool in this afternoon’s early kick-off match against Crystal Palace. Selhurst Park witnessed the Egyptian forward reach several career milestones in one - his 76th minute equaliser was also his 150th Premier League goal - making him the first African player to reach that figure.

Salah with Liddell in sight

Earlier this season, Salah edged past Steven Gerrard to become the fifth top scorer in Liverpool’s history. He put Liverpool ahead in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth at Anfield on 19 August to take his tally to 187 in all competitions. Just four players lie ahead of him in the all-time ranking: Billy Liddell, Gordon Hodgson, Roger Hunt and Ian Rush. In terms of goal-per-game ratio, Salah’s strike rate is only outstripped by Hodgson, who found the net with an average of 1.56 (377 goals in 241 appearances) - just slightly better than Mo’s 1.64.

Whether he will eventually dislodge Billy Liddell from fourth place will depend on how long he remains at Anfield. Salah’s contract is up at the end of next season - if he completes it and remains injury-free, he will be in with a good chance.

Liverpool all-time top scorers - strike rate in brackets

  • 346 Ian Rush (1.91)
  • 285 Roger Hunt (1.73)
  • 241 Gordon Hodgson (1.56)
  • 228 Billy Liddell (2.34)
  • 200 Mohamed Salah* (1.64)

For Salah, reaching the 200-goal mark is just the latest in a long line of personal achievements and club records during his six and a half seasons at Anfield. In 2018, he became the second fastest Liverpool player to reach 20 goals in history (just behind George Allan who managed the feat in 19 games in 1895/6); he is one of the top 10 players to have reached 30+ goals for the Reds in one season during the post-War years - in fact there have only been two seasons in which he has finished under 30 goals (2018–19 and 2019–20). And in 2020 he became the first Egyptian player to win the Champions League, scoring in the final against Spurs. With 45 goals and counting, Salah is also Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in European competition.
