Napoli vs Liverpool live online

Having made a stuttering start to the Premier League season, Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign away to Napoli on Wednesday, at a stadium that does not hold happy memories for Jürgen Klopp’s men.

This is the third time in five years that last term’s losing finalists have been drawn with Napoli in the Champions League group stage - and in the teams’ two Stadio Maradona meetings in the competition so far, the Reds have failed to register a point or even a goal.

In 2018/19, a season in which Liverpool went on to lift their sixth and most recent European title, Lorenzo Insigne’s last-gasp goal gave Napoli a 1-0 win in Italy. Twelve months later, strikes by Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente secured a 2-0 triumph for the hosts.

After a goalless draw with city rivals Everton on Saturday, Liverpool travel to Italy six points adrift of leaders Arsenal in the Premier League, with just two English top-flight victories to their name in 2022/23.

Napoli, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their first five matches of the Serie A campaign. Having defeated Lazio 2-1 on Saturday, Luciano Spalletti’s side are second in the Italian league, two points off frontrunners Atalanta.

Napoli vs Liverpool: home-and-away H2H

In the teams’ four Champions League meetings thus far, it is Napoli who have had the upper hand. In addition to the two home wins described above, the Partenopei held Liverpool to a 1-1 group-stage draw at Anfield in November 2019, Mertens opening the scoring before Dejan Lovren levelled for the Reds. The Italians’ only Champions League defeat to Liverpool was in December 2018, when Mohamed Salah’s goal sent the Merseysiders through to the last 16 at the visitors’ expense.

The sides also faced off in the group stage of the 2010/11 Europa League, with a 3-1 Liverpool win at Anfield - courtesy of a Steven Gerrard hat-trick - following a 0-0 draw in Naples.
