Netherlands vs Argentina preview

Argentina looking, as ever, to Lionel Messi for inspiration

A defeat to the Saudi Arabia, who Argentina should easily have disposed of on paper, made plotting a way through Group C ‘interesting’ for them, although they ended up clinching top spot thanks to comfortable 2-0 victories over Mexico and Poland despite not impressing all that much. La Albiceleste’s round of 16 clash against Australia looked to be heading a similar way after goals from Messi, in his 1000th professional match, and Julián Álvarez gave them a two-goal cushion with more than half-an-hour to go. Lionel Scaloni’s side were in total control and Messi was running the show when a goal out of nowhere for the Aussies almost led to a dramatic turnaround, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez required to make a vital save with almost the last kick of the game to prevent if from going to extra-time. Messi put in a vintage performance in the second half and Scaloni will be hoping his star man is in peak condition just at the right time.

Three two-goal victories for the Netherlands in four World Cup matches

Netherlands came through a not-especially-strong Group A with relatively little fuss, posting 2-0 victories over Senegal and hosts Qatar either side of a draw against Ecuador. “Are they actually any good?” is a question that’s been asked a lot of the Dutch and they went some way to answering that question in a positive manner with a ruthless display in the round of 16 against the USMNT, who themselves had looked so impressive in a group-stage draw against England, one of the tournament favourites. Argentina will, however, be another step up in class compared to the opponents they have faced so far and will almost certainly provide their toughest test.

Netherlands vs Argentina prediction

You get the feeling that both of these teams are capable of playing better than they have shown in the tournament so far. With six days’ rest before the quarter-final clash, they should both come into the game feeling fresh. Messi looked to be at his decisive best in the second half against Australia and, cliché as it is, having a player of that quality on the field could make the difference in what should be a tight game.

PredictionNetherlands 1-2 Argentina
