Full-time report:
Arsenal suffered through waves of Newcastle pressure, but they never let the game get away from their reach. Moments of class always brought the momentum back to the Gunners, who knew how to turn on the style when they needed to.
The St. James' Park atmosphere at the beginning of the game briefly overwhelmed the away side, before Ødegaard's lovely strike from the edge of the box took away the nerves that came with Murphy, Isak and Wilson causing havoc at the other end of the pitch.
The game turned slightly nasty after Arsenal's time management towards the end of the half struck a nerve with Howe's men, and that spike continued in the second, with the game always threatening to boil over.
However, Martinelli's fancy footwork caused Schär to poke the ball into his own net and double the lead for Arsenal, and from there, despite a late flurry of pressure, the game was over.

Saint-Maximin wins a corner after nice work again on the left. I'm right in saying that the Arsenal players will be glad he wasn't fit enough for 90 minutes.
Saint-Maximin forces a save from Ramsdale after a typically electric run down the left. However, Arsenal are, despite the pressure, fairly comfortable.

Hearts fly up out of mouths and down out of... as Joelinton's cross dribbles agonisingly across goal and out of play.
Newcastle have Arsenal pinned back in their own defensive third, but they are yet to find a killer moment that sees the away side sweat.

Ramsdale is down 'injured' after clashing with Almirón inside the box. The Newcastle fans, surprisingly, don't believe him.
Newcastle are pushing for a late scare:
Bruno Guimarães takes too long to find his feet on the edge of the box and sees the ball robbed and driven away before he can shoot.
Anderson then claims a penalty as he goes down next to Xhaka, but there is nothing in the tackle.
Jorginho zips a fast pass into the feet of Gabriel Jesus, but Schär does well to cut the space off and see the ball out for a goal kick.

Newcastle have to go for it now if they want to secure their place in the Champions League for next season, but Arsenal are doing a good job of slowing the game down with small fouls and running the ball out of play.

It's a lesson for Newcastle in taking your chances: Arsenal haven't been better than them, or had a barrage of clear chances, but they've been clinical when needed.
Arsenal are one point behind Manchester City with one came more; Newcastle are two points above Liverpool in 5th place.
It's a Schär own goal after great work from Martinelli. A quick counter attack with the Brazilian drove Arsenal up the pitch, and his low cross was poked in the net by the Newcastle defender.

Throw-ins and corner decisions are causing Arsenal and Newcastle players to argue across the pitch, as the nerves and anger levels turn up a gear.
A huge scream is heard as Jesus goes down next to the TV microphones. Schär's arm hit the striker in the side of the head, but the defender still wants him to get up.

Joelinton pokes a ball across the edge of the box to Bruno, but the shot from the midfielder is weak and Rasmdale collects it easily.

A delightful piece of play goes from Pope to Joelinton and then to Burn on the left, who drives forward and plays to Isak, who lays off to Willock inside the box. The midfielder, however, takes half a second too long and allows Xhaka to slide in heroically to save Arsenal from conceding a certain goal.

Saka's corner almost finds its way into the goal! Nick Pope is forced the scramble back and puch the whipped cross away.
Jesus' shot from the edge of the box hits Schär and the ball flies over and away for a corner.
We've had a couple of minutes where it feels as though both teams have opted to calm things down. It's all stopped when Ødegaard fould Bruno Guimarães who goes racing over to the referee for an explanation.
The Brazilian makes his way into the box from the left and he hits a shot like a wedged golf club which floats into the air before plonking onto the top of the crossbar, with Nick Pope and the rest of the stadium looking politely on.
MARTINELLI OFF THE CROSSBAR!
Wilson's header was furious and was flying into the goal from the free-kick, but Ramsdale twisted and turned his body in a split-second to stop the ball from going in.
WHAT A SAVE FROM RAMSDALE!!!!!
Eddie Howe was already celebrating the goal.
Isak heads a Murphy cross downwards and the ball comes flying back off the post from six yards out!
NEWCASTLE OFF THE POST AGAIN!
The referee doesn't stop the game, despite Saka stepping over an extra ball on the pitch as Arsenal attack.
In case you were wondering, there has been no drop off in the intensity levels of either side since the break. Immediately, it's Arsenal with the ball while Newcastle run around like machines.

Ødegaard gives the Gunners the advantage
It's all to play for in the second half, as Eddie Howe's side have shown they can get at Arsenal.
Half-time report:
A group of magpies is normally called a mischief or a conventicle, so take your pick at what you want to call this team of players who have smothered Arsenal for 45 minutes and made them sweat like hippos.
Despite the scoreline, which was a moment of brilliance from Ødegaard from the edge of the box, the two sides have been inseparable, fighting through the half and going blow for blow, seeing which team can reach the highest blood pressure levels. It's not an activity I'd recommend for the Geordies in the crowd, but on the pitch with elite athletes, it's made for an extremely exciting spectacle.

Arsenal rob the ball high up the pitch, Saka plays square to Martinelli who feeds Ødegaard, whose low shot from just yards out is saved brilliantly by the goalkeeper, keeping the game alive.

Xhaka has made a miraculous recovery and as he steps onto the pitch, he is surrounded by skeptical Newcastle players, who all want to share their condolences.
Xhaka is down, claiming to be injured. Wilson does not believe him. Ramsdale is laughing, presumably at a joke he just remembered.
Rasmdale catches Botman's header from a long-range Trippier free-kick.
Murphy is what Marcos Llorente was to Trippier at Atlético Madrid. He is occupying the half-space on the right and waiting for the full-back to fire a ball into his feet to carry towards the box.

He's OK to carry on, at least until half-time.
Saka is down holding his leg.
Isak is being marked by up to three players on Arsenal's right, who have clearly identified him as the danger man of the team.
Newcastle aren't creating clear-cut chances, but they are controlling the pace of the game and are exploiting Arsenal's weaknesses so far.
As I type this, Arsenal break with Ødegaard who feeds Martinelli down the left, but his shot/cross is poor. Arsenal are there, they just don't have much time at all to find their way through the Zebra herd.
Oof, Xhaka's slide in the box saves Arsenal after Joelinton had skipped past two defenders before turning inside to fire a shot away. Arteta's side survive, again.
Newcastle's press causes Arsenal problems in the buildup, which only fuels the crowd to scream even louder.
Ramsdale comes out to collect a Trippier cross but drops the ball, causing the black and white piranhas to circle immediately. Luckily for Arsenal, Jorginho was there to hoof the ball away from the danger zone.
So far, we've had 5 shots for each team, with 1 on target for Newcastle and 4 on target for The Gunners.
The game has, well, remained just as frantic as when it started. Wilson and Isak look like Batistuta and Totti together in some sort of dream team, linking up excellently well and causing Arsenal all sorts of problems.
The game has been very chaotic over the past five minutes, with both teams arriving on the edge of each others' box, unable to find the finishing touch.
Ramsdale scrambles out to push the ball away from Wilson, who was sniffing around the end of Trippier's cross.
Isak played the ball to Wilson on the edge of the box. The striker turned and fed Willock on the left, who hit a low shot down the middle of the goal. Ramsdale did brilliantly to get to it - that was the equaliser.
RAMSDALE SAVES ARSENAL
Isak makes Ben White look like a competition winner as he skips effortlessly past the right-back before sliding in a pass to Wilson, but the English striker can't find the angle to shoot.
He's up and hobbling, but looks OK to fight on.
Schär is down and receiving treatment.
Arsenal, all of a sudden, turn on the style and Saka is fed through the lines and breaks away. He gets inside the box and forces Pope to save with what looked like his chest/arm.

I think Ødegaard is annoyed at how many people said Gundogan was the best midfielder in the league after yesterday's game against Leeds. The Norwegian thrashes a ferocious effort from the right towards Pope's far corner, which the goalkeeper pushes wide.
I've just realised how tight Eddie Howe's trousers are. Perhaps that's the cause of his slightly red face today, or maybe it's the Geordie flora affecting his hayfever.
Zinchenko throws his head at a Trippier cross to clear the ball away for a corner. Arsenal are still leaving gaps out wide.
Arsenal may be in the lead, but the feeling is that Newcastle have the energy, talent and tactics to get in behind The Gunners; the difference is that Arsenal have taken advantage of the chance(s) they have had, they have been uber-clinical.
Martinelli takes advantage of a dawdling Murphy inside the box: as the Newcastle midfielder shapes to shoot, the Brazilian nips in to take the ball from his toes in a last-gasp tackle.
The free-kick was curled in by the Norwegian and was cleared to Saka. The winger took a touch inside from the right and passed Ødegaard on the edge of the box, who smacked a low drive through a crowd of players and past Nick Pope into the goal.
A big shove from Guimarães on Jesus, who goes down to ground like a dying swan.
Arsenal are trying to push through the lines but Newcastle's intensity is causing them to rush things as they try to keep up with the speed of the hosts.

Arsenal look shocked, and I can understand why. Maybe it's the black and white stripes, or maybe it's the fact that Newcastle have already run double the distance of Arteta's side after just 6 minutes.
The home team, despite not having the majority of the ball in the opening stages, are winning every battle they involve themselves in and are breaking rapidly down both wings.
Confidence fizzes through this Newcastle side like a energy drink-infused three-year-old.
Nothing can stop them: it's like they actually believe the Green Giant Sweetcorn advert - they will become one if they do what they are told.
What a start from the home side; the crowd is absolutely electric.
Isak, who has started on the left, gets the ball and whips a fierce effort towards goal that leaves Ben White with no other option but to throw his soul at the ball in order to stop it flying into the net.

Why is Partey on the bench?
Alright, it might not be the best chant, but if things don't got heir way against a very physical Newcastle, Arsenal fans might be wondering just why Arteta has left the Ghanaian out of the starting XI.
Jorginho is a mater ball-player, but his physicality is not up to the same level as Thomas and if I were Newcastle's manager, I'd be targeting him with some tough moments in the middle.

Figuring out Newcastle's lineup:
I reckon it might be a 4-4-2 with Isak and Wilson up front to give Kiwior two headaches instead of one.
The dual-striker formation might leave them short in midfield but the work ethics of the Newcastle middle men are such that they could potentially make it work, even if not for 90 minutes.
Isak, I suppose, could drift out to the wing and make the formation look more like a 4-2-3-1, which would give Bruno more space in the middle to pull the strings, knowing he's got the two workhorses behind him.

The last time out...
It was, erm, not a classic. Arsenal and Newcastle ground out a 0-0 draw that took my mind a while to remember. Eddie Howe's side set up to frustrate the eleven on the pitch, and they managed to do so to the 60,000 onlooking fans as well.
The point gained byThe Gunners put them 8 points clear of City, how they'd like to have that advantage now. The draw continued the unbeaten run of the team, which at that point had stretched to 11 matches.

Ødegaard hoping to channel 'hurt' to win again
“We came out and we showed a different spirit, a different team to last time,”
“(We were) very happy with the first half and then second half is a bit messy I would say. Three points and a good win for us and we needed this one to get back a bit.
“Everyone was so hurt after the game and we used this anger and the disappointment to get into this game and really bounce back, and I thought we did that especially in the first half.
“I think you can lose games but the way we lost; we didn’t play our game and we weren’t ourselves. That’s the most painful."

It was a big game for us, it was a London derby, and we earned the right to win the game.
Are Newcastle part of the so-called 'Big Six'?: They already are third in the league right now, and they merit that position with the way they have performed and the amount of changes they have made. They have made some very intelligent decisions as well, so they deserve to be where they are.
On Manchester City feeling pressure: I don’t know what’s going to happen. They have won a lot of games in the last few months, and if they continue to do so they will deserve to win the league. If they don’t then we have to be ready, winning our games, to be there.

Newcastle have no chance of catching The Gunners, but a positive result would give them a huge opportunity to make the Champions League places for next season.

Arsenal team news:
Saliba, Tomiyasu and Elneny are the Arsenal absentees for this game (and the rest of the season), but Arteta can potentially call on Gabriel, who is set to undergo a late fitness test to see if he is fit to play. The defender suffered a knock against Chelsea and was substituted off.
Toon team news:
The good news is that Newcastle manager Ediie Howe can call back Sean Longstaff after he recovered from a foot injury and Allan Saint-Maximin has been training and may be available.
As for Lascelles, things aren't so positive, as the defender is set to miss out what's left of the season with a calf injury, and Krafth is out with a damaged ACL.
