Pochettino sends message to Trump ahead of USA World Cup
The United States Men’s National Team coach has spoken about his past and his present, and even about Trump’s meeting with Infantino.

Mauricio Pochettino is on his way to the United States ahead of the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal against Panama this Thursday. Before that crucial clash, which could send the team to the final, the Argentine coach sat down with Sky Sports for an interview covering his past, present, and future in football.
A golden opportunity for the USMNT
Asked about his decision to take charge of the United States, Pochettino explained that he simply couldn’t turn down the opportunity:
“I felt it was a great opportunity, so we started paying attention. When the offer came in, saying yes was easy. Hosting a World Cup is an incredible experience, and in a country like the United States, I think it’s amazing.”
Infantino, Trump, and an honest opinion
Pochettino didn’t hold back when discussing the recent meeting between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump following the latter’s return to office.
“I saw Infantino with Trump, and Infantino said, ‘Oh, the US can win the World Cup.’ The president asked, ‘Can we win?’ Maybe he should have asked me directly, because I don’t think Infantino could name three or four of our players.”
Still, Pochettino had a positive message for Trump that will surely encourage American fans ahead of the 2026 World Cup:
“Mr. President, with your help, and with the fans supporting the World Cup organization, anything is possible.”
A past (and maybe future) in England
Reflecting on his time in the Premier League, Pochettino admitted that his Chelsea stint was complicated, particularly given the club’s turbulent period, which ultimately led to his abrupt departure at the end of the season.
“I believe that when something isn’t working, it’s best to stop and consider other options. And I think parting ways was the best decision for both sides.”
He also spoke warmly about his Tottenham years and even left the door open for a possible return:
“When I left the club, I remember saying in an interview that I’d like to return to Tottenham someday… I’m in the United States now, so I won’t talk about that, but what I said back then – five or six years ago – I still feel deep in my heart: Yes, I’d love to go back one day. We’ll see when the time is right, as Daniel (Levy) said.”
