Erling Haaland’s incredible international record blows Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappé away
The Norway and Manchester City striker has produced a scoring rate unlike almost any other modern superstar on the international stage.

Erling Haaland has already established himself as one of the most feared goalscorers in club soccer, but his international record is even more impressive.
Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappé no match for Haaland
The Norway striker has netted 62 goals in only 54 games for his country, a remarkable 1.15 goals per game. That completely blows Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and everyone else out of the water when it comes to pure international scoring efficiency.
That figure is even more impressive given Norway had not qualified for the World Cup since 1994 and have only once appeared at the European Championship, in 2000.
No players in the history of world soccer have scored more international goals than Ronaldo and Messi, who are two of only three players to reach a century of goals for their countries. Iranian legend Ali Daei is the other, in case you were wondering.
The duo, however, have also played significantly more international games than almost everyone else, which means there are three current World Cup stars who have scored more than 50 times for their national teams and boast superior strike rates to the veteran pair. Kylian Mbappé is not one of them.
Ronaldo and Messi by the numbers
Ronaldo’s 146 goals for Portugal have come in 233 appearances, both records at international level. That works out at 0.63 goals per game, down from his club average of 0.76.
Compared to Ronaldo, Messi actually has a higher scoring rate at club level (0.83 goals per game), but a slightly lower rate for Argentina. His 125 goals in 204 caps works out at 0.61 per appearance.
Interestingly, Mbappé, who began the 2026 World Cup with an international scoring rate of 0.59 goals per game, has now moved above his former PSG teammate to 0.62 (64 goals in 104 caps).
The true international scoring elite
Only two players in history have been more lethal than Haaland.
Vivian Woodward scored 75 goals in 53 games for England between 1903 and 1914, a rate of 1.42 per game. However, more than half of those came in amateur matches, which were considered official internationals for the opposition at the time.
Poul Nielsen of Denmark scored 52 goals in 38 games from 1910 to 1925, a rate of 1.37 per game.

Two more 2026 World Cup stars beat Ronaldo and Messi
You might think Ronaldo, Messi and Mbappé would lead the way among modern stars, but two players are actually ahead of them.
England captain Harry Kane (85 goals in 119 caps, 0.71 goals per game) and Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku (93 in 132) both are on track to reach the 100-goal club before their careers end.
Other notable names ahead of Ronaldo and Messi include Hungarian icons Sándor Kocsis (1.1) and Ferenc Puskás (0.94), West Germany legend Gerd Müller (1.1), Brazilian trio Pelé (0.84), Romário (0.79) and Ronaldo Nazário (0.63), and former Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta (0.72).
History-making Haaland
While Haaland still has a long way to go before matching the longevity and achievements of legends such as Ronaldo and Messi, his international scoring rate is already something almost never seen before. With 62 goals in just 54 appearances for Norway, the Manchester City striker is producing numbers that put him among the most lethal finishers in soccer history.
