Robert Ergas became Pumas’ first official reinforcement ahead of the Apertura 2023 tournament. The Uruguayan successfully underwent a medical at the Sports Medicine Directorate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) facilities on Friday. At the end of his examination, he offered a few words for the media.

The 25-year-old left-back gave his views on how the Liga MX is viewed abroad and the high level he sees in the Mexican tournament: “The truth is, the level here is very high - that’s the reality today. Right now, in South America, I think the strongest leagues are Brazil, Mexico and Argentina,” he told reporters.

Ergas, who has been without a club since leaving Defensor Sporting Club at the start of the year, made his last official appearance with Cerro Largo FC (where he was on loan) in the 0-1 defeat to Peñarol on 23 October 2022. He played a total of 30 games in Uruguay’s top tier last year, scoring one and setting up another two.

Time out

Upon leaving the UNAM medical center, Newo explained why he has been inactive for so long. “The last time I was out for while was simple because I was rejecting offers - financially, none of the offers I received were good for my family or for me and so I prioritized spending more quality time with my children, with my family who I hadn’t seen for a long time. I had been out of the country and wanted to see them. More than anything, that was the reason”.

Despite not having played in a game for seven months, the Montevideo-born wing-back passed physical and medical check-ups without any problems at all and was very confident, as he remained in shape and performing well during his absence from the courts.

It was Auriazul technical director Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed who requested Ergas’ signing, He already knew the player and felt he was the right profile for the project. The defender has signed a two-year contract and joins as a free agent as he was without a club.

The player confessed that he had known about Pumas for a long time, and even has a collection of blue and gold shirts that he promised to show on social media. “I have alittle anecdote. My brother-in-law in Uruguay was very close to a businessman here in Mexico and he was a Pumas fan so I have some shirts from previous seasons which he brought back as gifts. It must have been fate that brought me here,” he said.
