Pumas’ special place in legendary Lewandowski’s Barça legacy
Robert Lewandowski, who is to leave Barcelona after four seasons, launched his goal-laden Blaugrana career against the Liga MX club.
Robert Lewandowski is set to bring his time at Barcelona to a close, after a four-season run in which the Pole earned the affection of the fans through his relentless work rate and professionalism. Three LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey, three Spanish Super Cups, and 118 goals in 192 games: that’s the legacy Lewandowski leaves in the Catalan capital.
And it was against Liga MX opposition that the striker’s successful Barça career took flight.
When Lewa lit up Barça’s Pumas pummelling
After signing in summer 2022, Lewandowski’s maiden competitive goal for Barça came against Real Sociedad in LaLiga in late August. By then, however, he had already enjoyed the feeling of hitting the net for the first time in the Blaugrana shirt.
Two weeks earlier, Lewandowski was on target against Pumas in the Joan Gamper Trophy, an annual friendly match held by the Catalan club.
Pumas were managed by Andrés Lillini, while Xavi Hernández was at the helm for Barcelona. Although Lewandowski had already made three friendly appearances for the club, it was against Pumas that he opened his account - and he did so in front of the home crowd at Camp Nou.
The goal came just two minutes into the match. Pedri slipped through the assist to Lewandowski, who cut past goalkeeper Julio González inside the box. Even from a tight angle, the forward found the back of the net.
Barcelona went on to win 6-0. Lewandowski played 61 minutes in a dazzling performance - scoring once, providing two assists, and nearly adding a second goal after striking the post.
Has Lewandowski faced any other Liga MX teams with Barcelona?
Yes: Lewandowski also came up against Club América, in December 2023, in a friendly played in the United States.
In that game, Lewandowski logged 76 minutes but was unable to find the scoresheet, as Barça fell 3-2 to an América side that had just been crowned champions of the Liga MX’s Apertura 2023 tournament.
