Pumas with little room for manoeuvre as the Clausura 2023 hots up
UNAM set to face highly demanding rivals in the final stretch of the tournament - and they need to win every game.
There will be no more concessions for Pumas in the final stretch of the Clausura 2023. After losing to Querétaro last time out, in a game in which goalkeeper Gil Alcalá simply could not be beaten, Mohamed’s men will have to pull out all of the stops between now and the end of the regular season if they are to make the play-offs. Every match from now on will be like a final - games they must win to not end up as one of the worst teams of the campaign.
Mohamed hopes his side can pull off a miracle in the last four games - even if they manage to win all of them, they will still need to pray that at least one of their rivals stumbles to sneak into the next round.
The last four opportunities for Pumas
Let’s take a look at the teams they will be facing. On paper, Atlético San Luis is the least complicated rival they will meet from this point on - and the next opponent. San Luis head into the match on 15 points after recording a comfortable victory against Mazatlán. After that game however, things will get much tougher, with clashes against teams in the Top 4 of the table: Toluca (2nd), América (4th) and the leaders Monterrey, a match that will be played at the Gigante de Acero.
With 12 points left to play for, Universidad Nacional can only hope to finish the regular season with 23 points if they win all of their remaining games.
