Marco Balich, a creative director who has directed numerous opening gams for the Olympic Games, has been commissioned to create a 30-minute show which will be the first “Olympic-style opening ceremony” at a World Cup. “FIFA and the supreme committee — especially FIFA — realized how much effort was going into creating the ceremony and creating for the first time something that’s not just someone singing before the opening game,” Balich told AP.
Dua Lipa, Rod Stewart and Shakira amongst those NOT performing in the Qatar 2022 World Cup opening ceremony
The build-up to the opening ceremony has been dominated by who won’t be performing rather than who will be. London-born pop star Dua Lipa, Scottish crooner Rod Stewart and English rock group The Cure have all rejected offers to perform, while Colombian singer Shakira has made a U-turn on her decision to headline the event. As things stand, American rapper Lil Baby, singer of ‘The World Is Yours To Take’, one of the tournament’s official songs, K-pop star Jungkook and Indian belly dancer Nora Fatehi are confirmed performers.
