Real Madrid and Barcelona eye first trophy of 2026: Spanish Super Cup teams, schedule and format
A Clásico final is a possibility once again as four of Spain’s leading teams head to Saudi Arabia for the first trophy of 2026.

We’re only a few days into January, and Real Madrid and Barcelona already have a shot at lifting their first trophy of 2026. The 2026 Spanish Super Cup gets underway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, January 7, with the Clásico rivals among the four teams hoping to collect some silverware.
Which teams are playing in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup?
Under the current four-team format, the Spanish Super Cup usually features the previous season’s LaLiga champions and runners-up, along with the Copa del Rey winners and runners-up.
That was not quite the case in 2024-25. Barcelona beat Real Madrid to both the league title and the Copa del Rey, leaving the Spanish Soccer Federation to invite the next two highest finishers in LaLiga to complete the field.
Here are the four teams taking part:
- Barcelona, 2024-25 LaLiga and Copa del Rey winners
- Real Madrid, 2024-25 LaLiga and Copa del Rey runners-up
- Atlético Madrid, 2024-25 LaLiga third place
- Athletic Club, 2024-25 LaLiga fourth place

2026 Spanish Super Cup tiebreaker rules: Is there extra time?
As was the case for the first time last year, there will be no extra time if a Spanish Super Cup match is tied after 90 minutes. Instead, games will go straight to a penalty shootout at the end of regulation.
2026 Spanish Super Cup prize money: How much does the winner get?
The financial incentives are not insignificant. This year’s champion will take home €2 million ($2.34 million), while the runner-up will receive €1.4 million ($1.64 million). Both third- and fourth-place teams will earn €800,000 ($935,000) each.
