Two games, 82 minutes, one stunning goal, and an even greater sense of relief. That’s Kylian Mbappé’s return from the international break. A much-needed boost.

He left as a question mark and comes back as a certainty. Both he and his left knee, the one that has troubled him since December 7. But with France, he looked like himself again.

He took flight against Brazil, bursting forward with pace and finishing with trademark precision, the kind of move reminiscent of Ronaldo at his peak. That moment dismantled Brazil and put Mbappé at the center of France’s strongest lineup.

France’s rotated side handled Colombia without him, but when Mbappé entered in the 78th minute, he nearly scored three times. He did find the net once, only for it to be ruled out by a narrow offside call.

More than anything, though, one message stands out. He returns to Madrid healthy and ready. He’s pushing for a starting spot again.

Eyes on what’s next

With Bayern Munich looming as the biggest challenge ahead, Mbappé’s immediate focus is on Saturday’s clash away to Mallorca.

This is the real test. A chance to prove his performances with France were not just flashes, but a true return to form. A chance to reclaim his place in Real Madrid’s starting lineup.

He did just that with France, starting under Didier Deschamps against a Brazil side featuring Vinícius Jr. and coached by Carlo Ancelotti. And he delivered.

It marked his first start after a media storm and a 46-day gap since his previous one, which came on February 21 against Osasuna. That night, Madrid lost 2-1, and Mbappé decided, in agreement with the club, to step back.

Following a visit to Paris and consultations with a specialist, he now finally feels close to 100 percent again.

A gradual comeback

He was not fully fit at the Etihad, nor in the Madrid derby. That’s why coach Álvaro Arbeloa managed his minutes carefully, giving him 21 minutes in Manchester and 26 against Atlético Madrid.

Arbeloa explained the approach clearly. “After three weeks out, the normal thing is to build him back gradually, which is what I prefer,” he said. “With his national team, he can get more minutes and come back better prepared.”

That is exactly what happened.

Light at the end of the tunnel

This comes after a long stretch of frustration. Since early December, Mbappé has not been able to play freely without discomfort. There were setbacks, uncertainty, and constant adjustments.

He still managed to reach 59 goals in the 2025 calendar year, but that late push came at a cost.

He initially stepped aside, then returned the way he left, by scoring. After a brief appearance in Saudi Arabia, he hit nine goals in eight games. Yet the performances did not match the numbers.

The result was five missed games due to his knee. Then came appearances against Manchester City, Atlético Madrid, and the international break, all part of fine-tuning his recovery.

Now, he looks to have finally turned a corner. He rejoins a Real Madrid side that has evolved under Arbeloa, even without its main striker, the man who has scored 38 goals this season.

Now, that weapon is back. And Madrid has every reason to be excited.
