Real Madrid - Manchester City: At it happened
Real Madrid and Manchester City played out a thrilling first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu to leave this Champions League tie perfectly poised.
They say that styles make fights. That was certainly true of an all-action clash in the Spanish capital that swung from one side to the other, leaving those in attendance feeling decidedly punch-drunk. City were on the offensive from the first bell and Bernardo Silva fired his side ahead in the opening minutes, catching Andriy Lunin off-guard with a clever free kick.
Madrid fought back and hit City twice in quick succession, first Eduardo Camavinga and then Rodrygo benefitting from fortunate deflections to edge their side ahead. The hosts led at the break but City upped the pace in the second half, pinning a tiring Madrid to the ropes.
City toiled away but needed something special to break through the Madrid defences. After 20 minutes of relentless pressure it was Josko Gvardiol who finally broke through, curling home from the edge of the box to level the tie. Minutes later Phil Foden pounced on a loose ball and rifled it, effortlessly, into the top corner. City were ahead, Madrid were swaying.
It felt like a knockout blow was coming and, for less seasoned opponents, it may well have done. But Madrid rolled with the punches, reset their stance and launched one final flurry. The final blow was delivered by Fede Valverde, who struck a fierce volley to level the scores and bring a thrilling fight to an honourable draw.
What is Phil Foden's injury from Real Madrid clash?
Phil Foden reiterated his reputation as one of the most talented attacking players in the world, scoring a sensational second half strike at the Bernabeu. The Englishman was taken off late on after a collision, sparking concern that he may have picked up a serious injury.
“It was a knock,” Pep Guardiola said after the game. “He was grumpy with me because I made the substitution.”
Foden also downplayed the injury, describing it as a “bad dead leg”.
“For the fans, it must have been one of the best games you could have possibly watched, two great teams with possibly the best attackers in the world going head to head,” Foden said. “It’s what the fans want to see, with plenty of goals as well.
City boss aims dig at Real Madrid president
"Florentino, the stadium looks brilliant but you need to make the pitch better."
Pep Guardiola reveal that Kevin de Bruyne was vomiting ahead of the game and was not able to play. Phil Foden, who hobbled from the field late on, will be fine.

We're now just five minutes from kick-off and the Santiago Bernabeu is full to the rafter for this Champions League clash. Madrid and City are, quite simply, two of the finest teams on the planet and every meeting between the two European powerhouses is something to savour.
Here's the two teams that start tonight, an abundance of quality on show from both sides.
Real Madrid take to the field
Kick-off is fast approaching in the Spanish capital and Real Madrid are on the hallowed turf of the Santiago Bernabeu. Los Blancos secured a fairly unconvincing victory over RB Leipzig in the Round of 16 and will need to up their game if they are to progress against City, the reigning European champions.
Real Madrid - Manchester City predictions
There are few more daunting tasks in club soccer than a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu. The feeling around Real Madrid's home stadium has reached almost mythical status on European nights.
It didn't seem to bother these City fans, though. They believe Pep Guardiola's team have what it takes to triumph.
Real Madrid take to the field at Santiago Bernabeu!
A huge roar erupts in the Spanish capital as Real Madrid, the 14 -time European champions, emerge from the tunnel! Carlo Ancelotti has already won two Champions League titles with Los Blancos and is in the running to complete a historic hat-trick this season.
The Madrid fans certainly sound up for it!
Big call from Pep Guardiola today - Kevin de Bruyne starts on the bench for Manchester City. The Belgian missed a big chunk of the season due to injury but he has starred since his return, contributing two more fine goals in last weekend's win over Crystal Palace.
So, why is the Belgian on the bench against Real Madrid? Calum Roche explains all...
European champions arrive at Santiago Bernabeu
And for once, we're not talking about Real Madrid. Manchester City blew past Madrid in the semi-finals last year and went on to lift the Champions League for the very first time.
Real Madrid are, almost unthinkably, the underdogs to progress in the Champions League; City have the air of champions and have proved their quality before. But will the power of the Bernabeu help to tip this game in Madrid's favour?
He's the reigning Premier League Golden Boot winner, a European champion and one of the most feared attacking players of his generation. And yet, Erling Haaland's record against Real Madrid is a little underwhelming for a player of his incredible talents.
WATCH: Manchester City arrive at Santiago Bernabeu
For the fourth time in five seasons, Manchester City arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu for a Champions League knock-out clash. Pep Guardiola's side were finally crowned European champions last year and will be eager to retain their crown this time around.
To do so they have to get past the 14-time winners, the self-proclaimed Kings of Europe, Real Madrid...
How important is the injury to Kyle Walker?
Manchester City supporters have travelled to the Spanish capital in great numbers for the Champions League rematch with Real Madrid. We spoke to a few City fans earlier today and the loss of Kyle Walker was front and centre ahead of kick-off.
Will Madrid take advantage of Walker's absence? Here's what the fans had to say...
Real Madrid - Manchester City predictions!
Now that you've seen the teams, who do you think has the edge?
Real Madrid have named a strong starting XI and will look to take the game to City. The visitors have gone with a more conservative team, but still boast elite quality in the form of Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.
Head over to @English_AS and have your say!
Why isn't Kevin de Bruyne playing for Manchester City?
The absence of the Belgian playmaker from the City starting XI is the big news to emerge ahead of kick-off. Kevin de Bruyne has been left on the bench, with a trident of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva preferred by Pep Guardiola.
So, why? As City prepare for another trip to the Bernabeu it looks like Guardiola has opted for a more conservative team, favouring a midfield duo of Mateo Kovacic and Rodri. That should give City greater control in the midfield and reduce Madrid's ability to counter-attack with pace.
Manchester City team news: De Bruyne benched
Big news from the Manchester City camp, Kevin de Bruyne starts on the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu!
A trip to the Santiago Bernabeu is a daunting task at the best of times. The prospect facing Manchester City fans is made even more difficult by the incredible performances of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr, who have both been in fine goal-scoring form this season.
We spoke to some Manchester City fans in Madrid to ask which player they are most worried about...

Here it is, confirmed team news from Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid host Manchester City in the quarter-final of the Champions League.

What it's Carlo Ancelotti's record against Pep Guardiola?
They are, without doubt, two of the finest managers of their age. Serial winners who have spent most of their coaching careers circling the most illustrious of sporting institutions, hoovering up silverware wherever they go.
Unsurprisingly, when these two meet the spectacle is also memorable and no manager has inflicted more defeats on Guardiola than Ancelotti. Can he do it again tonight?
Real Madrid's iconic Santiago Bernabeu has undergone a $1 billion renovation in recent years, giving the city centre venue a retractable roof and fully movable turf field. Tonight, Madrid have received dispensation from UEFA to keep the roof closed throughout.
Why have they done this? And what's their record like with the roof closed?

Real Madrid confirmed team news
As is his want, Carlo Ancelotti has announced the Real Madrid team news ahead of the designated one-hour deadline. Little surprising from the Madrid boss, who names a fluid front three of Vinicius, Bellingham and Rodrygo.
First up, team news. These two European powerhouses can call upon some of the most talented players in the world, but both Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola are missing a coupe of first-choice players for tonight's game.
What does that mean for today's game? We take a look...
