At 34 years old, Sergio Busquets remains a key player for Barcelona and the captain of the team under head coach Xavi Hernández, but he might be playing his last season with his boyhood club. The Spanish international’s contract with the LaLiga side expires at the end of this campaign and he will not extend his stay at Camp Nou, according to Sport.

Busquets MLS-bound

Per the report, Busquets is aware that his time is up in Europe’s top tier and he has been gradually playing fewer minutes across all competitions. So the next step in his career will be playing in Major League Soccer and the midfielder is expected to join Inter Miami in summer 2023, after his contract with Barcelona expires on 30 June.

Before the start of the current campaign, it was said that Barcelona offered Busquets a two-year contract extension, but he only wanted one. This means that in January the veteran can sign a pre-contract agreement with the franchise owned by David Beckham and negotiations have been ongoing for the past few weeks.

Busquets is not the only Barcelona player that has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer. Due to his lack of minutes, Gerard Piqué is also considering accepting an offer to join his teammate at Inter Miami next summer, while Sergi Roberto almost joined the LA Galaxy before the start of the current season.

Busquets made his debut for Barcelona in 2008 under head coach Pep Guardiola and quickly took over the midfield as a pivot, totalling over 600 Blaugrana appearances since then. Busquets was part of the team that won a treble of LaLiga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League in 2009 and 2015.
