Rummenige on Barçagate: “I laughed when I read the news”
The former Bayern Munich CEO and current UEFA Executive Committee member says he was not surprised by the scandal.
The Barçagate scandal has had repercussions not only in Spain, but also beyond. The case uncovered by AS and Cadena SER of payments by Barcelona to a referee for 17 years has been commented on by European football legend Karl Heinz Rummenigge in an interview with Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport.
“Believe me when I tell you that I laughed when I read the news. But that doesn’t surprise me: every time we played in Spain I had a strange feeling,” said the former German player in reference to the case.
On the transfer market, he criticised the Premier League and the clubs that spend exorbitant amounts of money. “England spends astronomical sums in an unintelligent, irrational way, and the other countries continue to suffer financially and through scandals, but still manage to take home trophies. That means the British are making crazy mistakes, theirs is an out-of-control market.
