Prior to this evening’s US Open Cup final, Inter Miami’s goalkeeping coach Sebastián Saja gave an interview to TyC Sports, in which he highlighted the positive impact that Lionel Messi is having on the rest of the squad.

“The revolution that the team has undergone since Messi’s arrival has been total, there’s no doubt about it. The team has actually not changed that much structurally, it has been a revolution in terms of results - which is what everyone enjoys the most and is the most visible, thing but it has also been a revolution in everything that surrounds the club: impact, ticket sales... and so on,” Saja told TyC Sports.

The former Argentine goalkeeper added that Messi has an extremely high competitive level and approaches each match with the same importance - as if it were a Champions League tie or the World Cup final - tournaments that ‘La Pulga’ has won during his career.

“He has a competitive hunger of the highest level; it’s the same hunger he has to win a Champions League or a World Cup. He approaches every game thinking about winning it, in both the immediate and long term,” the goalkeeping coach explained.

Saja also believes that the perception of the team by their rivals has also changed since Messi’s arrival. That in itself has generated greater confidence among the players.

“Now, every team is watching and hoping that Inter Miami won’t qualify for the playoffs because if they do, they can go on to win the league too... not even the most optimistic teams would prefer not to face them. The rivals look at you differently, you feel different, the energy has changed. Inter Miami players feels like winners, Leo has conveyed this to them, he has achieved this,” he concluded.
