Update:

Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong has died following an armed attack on his team’s bus as they traveled back from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex on Sunday, the Ghana Football Association said. The team was attacked on the Bibiani–Goaso road, in Ahyiresu, when assailants stopped the bus and opened fire. Several players and staff fled to save their lives.

The attackers fired at the bus as it attempted to reverse, hitting Frimpong, 20, in the head. He later died in hospital and is the only reported fatality from the incident. According to local media reports, some players and staff remain missing after fleeing into the forest to seek shelter following the attack.

Ghana soccer community left shaken

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club,” the statement read.

The incident has shaken the entire soccer community. The GFA has expressed its deepest condolences to the player’s family, his teammates, coaching staff, club officials and everyone connected with Berekum Chelsea at this difficult time.

The incident has renewed concerns about safety, with several Ghanaian clubs having reported similar attacks in recent years, including FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities and AshantiGold. Local police said additional personnel and crime scene experts had been deployed, adding that those responsible would be arrested as soon as possible.

Ghana are set to compete in Group L, with England, Croatia and Panama, at the World Cup, in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, this summer, with the tragedy casting a shadow over the country’s soccer community ahead of the tournament.
