Luis Enrique’s youthful Spain side begin their World Cup campaign on Wednesday meeting probably the most accessible rival from their group, Costa Rica - on paper at least. This will be the first time the two nations have met in official competition, the last meeting, an international friendly in November 2017 ended in a 5-0 victory for the Spaniards, although most of that side have since retired from international football.
The current Spain squad has been rejuvenated and for many of them, this is their first World Cup. “They are young, and for that reason they are brimming with energy and hope. I am hoping to see the best of them, and play seven games at this World Cup,” Luis Enrique told reporters on the eve of the game.

Spain vs Costa Rica preview
Spain coach Luis Enrique won’t be underestimating Costa Rica, the only Central American team to have won a match at a World Cup - and especially after watching Saudi Arabia topple Argentina in one of the greatest upsets in the tournament’s history. Spain, who lost their opening game in the 2010 edition, will need a positive result ahead of their meetings with Germany and Japan later in the group stage.
Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suárez wants his side to play to their “tactical and mental strengths” and called on players to be strong for this opening test. “It will be a game that will demand us to be at our best tactically and fully alert at all times. We have to try to make our rivals feel uncomfortable. After that, we will need to make the most of our virtues. We need the best from everybody. Our World Cup campaign started long before this game. We have spent a lot of time planning for this and we hope to get off on a good footing. We have to be strong collectively, as a team. I think we have improved a lot recently,” he said.
Who is the referee?
Emirati referee Mohammed Abdulla will be overseeing the match - he has been an official FIFA-qualified international referee since 2010. He will be accompanied by assistants Mohamed Al-Hammadi and Hasan Al-Mahri.
