Toni Kroos was right about Barcelona in the Champions League

The archives have a way of coming back to haunt teams, especially in soccer. In this case, though, they’re making Toni Kroos look spot on. The former Real Madrid midfielder has never been shy about sharing his opinions, and back in January, he made a bold prediction about Barcelona. If they didn’t change their style of play, he said, their UEFA Champions League campaign would fall apart.

Kroos’ warning after Super Cup win

After Barcelona defeated Real Madrid in the Supercopa de España final in January, Kroos discussed Barça’s approach on his podcast, questioning whether it could hold up against elite European opposition.

“They’re still very happy about the Super Cup,” Kroos said, “but now comes the Champions League, where they face top-level opponents. They’re not going to win any international trophy, they’re not going to win the Champions League. If you’re fatigued and don’t change your style, it becomes very obvious how exposed you are. Any team can hurt them and knock them out.”

A familiar critique of Flick’s Barça

This wasn’t a one-off comment. Kroos has repeatedly taken aim at Barcelona’s tactical approach under head coach Hansi Flick.

He made a similar point last season, arguing that Barça’s defensive structure would prevent them from winning the Champions League. So far, that assessment has held up. In two seasons under Flick, Barcelona have yet to reach a Champions League final, reinforcing Kroos’ argument that their current style leaves them vulnerable when it matters most.

Whether Barcelona adjust or double down on their philosophy will determine if Kroos’ prediction continues to age well.
