United States shocked to discover the enormous unfinished “ghost stadium” that has been empty for 16 years
Reports have circulated in the US regarding Valencia’s new stadium, which has been abandoned for 16 years.
On January 11, construction work on the Nou Mestalla — the future home of Valencia CF — officially resumed after being paralyzed for 16 years due to a lack of funding. Now, the goal is for the stadium to be ready for inauguration by the summer of 2027.
In the meantime, Valencia continues to play its home matches at the current Mestalla while work progresses on the new venue, with the construction of the metal structure and roof set to be awarded soon.

The state of the stadium, along with the club’s financial situation, has not gone unnoticed by international media outlets such as Sportbible, which reported on the issues Valencia has faced in completing its new home. “It’s still empty, but it’s not abandoned after work finally resumed,” the outlet noted.
“The project has been fraught with setbacks from the start,” the article adds, referring to the financial difficulties that have plagued the project. Architect Mark Fenwick, who is overseeing the design, called the resumption of work on the Nou Mestalla “a turning point in the history of the club and the city.”

According to the club, construction is several weeks ahead of schedule and progressing well. Construction company FCC has already begun work on the interior architecture — a phase initially slated to start in May but that has now commenced earlier than planned, thus shortening the original timeline.
