Update:

The United States’ World Cup preparations conclude on Saturday with a friendly game against Germany, the four-time world champions. It’s a tough test for Mauricio Pochettino’s side but they will come into the game with confidence.

Last weekend the USMNT put in an entertaining performance to beat Senegal 3-2 in Charlotte. It was the most impressive US showing of the year and it featured a return-to-form for talisman Christian Pulisic.

Pulisic had gone more than two years without scoring for the national team but he proved decisive against Senegal, the AFCON finalists. The AC Milan forward scored and set up another goal in the opening 20 minutes to set the United States on the way to victory. Pochettino will be hoping to build on that momentum and is set to name a strong team against Germany.

Pochettino used 22 different players over the course of the Senegal win, giving the vast majority of his squad a run-out ahead of the World Cup. Saturday’s game against Germany will be played more like a competitive game, with an emphasis on getting a positive performance to close out the preparations.

The only enforced absence for the US is central defender Chris Richards, who is still working his way back from a left ankle injury suffered with club team Crystal Palace last month. The US will hope to have Richards back in time for the World Cup opener against Paraguay next week.

“Chris Richards is on the right path to coming back and being completely with the squad,” US midfielder Weston McKennie explained. “I think everyone trusts his body and what he feels and the coaching staff as well. He’s an important piece of the group, (with) his energy, his leadership on and off the field. And so obviously we’re just all behind him and can’t wait to have him back and out with the group.”
