Ciudad de México Update:

Wayne Rooney — the legendary striker who defined an era for England — didn’t hesitate when asked who he considers the best center‑forward to ever wear the Three Lions shirt. For him, the answer is clear: Harry Kane.

During a conversation with Rio Ferdinand, Rooney praised the current Bayern Munich star with striking conviction.

For me, he’s the best No. 9 England has ever had. He’s lethal, he’s smart. He knows how to find space. He’s a special guy. Put him in the box and he scores.”

A different kind of goalscorer

Rooney emphasized that Kane’s brilliance isn’t just about finishing — it’s about how he reads the game. He admitted that Kane’s decision‑making still surprises him.

“Sometimes he shoots and you think, ‘What are you doing? Why from there?’ And then he scores. For me, he’s above everyone.”

The numbers back it up

Beyond opinions, Kane’s résumé speaks for itself. He became England’s all‑time leading scorer in March 2023, and he hasn’t stopped widening the gap since. His list of records is staggering:

  • England’s all‑time top scorer
  • Most World Cup goals by an English player
  • Tottenham Hotspur’s all‑time leading scorer
  • Golden Boot winner at the 2018 World Cup
  • Three‑time Bundesliga top scorer
  • More than 500 official career goals
  • Only English player with 75+ international goals
  • First player to score five World Cup penalties (excluding shootouts)

A compliment that defines an era

It’s rare for an icon like Rooney to place another striker above himself — and above legends like Gary Lineker or Alan Shearer. But for the former Manchester United star, there’s no debate. Kane embodies the modern striker: elite finishing, high‑level intelligence, leadership, and a consistency that has made him England’s undisputed reference point.

Now, the only thing separating him from the title of “the greatest ever” is the World Cup — and he’s just three wins away from lifting it. If Kane brings the trophy home, Rooney’s declaration won’t just be an opinion. It’ll be history.
