What did Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp say about the injury suffered by Mo Salah with Egypt?

Salah was forced off the field in the first half of the group stage draw against Ghana at AFCON 2023.

A few moments before West Ham United attacker Mohammed Kudus put Ghana ahead against Egypt, the Pharoahs suffered an even greater blow when Mohamed Salah picked up an injury. The Egyptians were instantly shaken by their star man being forced to leave the field just before half time, while Liverpool have also been left cursing their luck. In his pre-match press conference before The Reds’ Premier League game away to Bournemouth on Saturday, manager Jürgen Klopp was asked how Salah was.

Klopp: Salah injury “a shock”

We don’t know anything. I spoke last night with him and how it is with these injuries, you need further assessment. That’s what they are doing now and then we will know more. Of course, it was in that moment a shock: ‘Oh my God, what is it?’

“You couldn’t see that it was like [being] hit by something with high-intensity, you couldn’t see [that] and then going down, you have these kind of hamstring injuries in a different way but he still felt it and we all know how rarely Mo goes off or needs to go off so there is definitely something and we will see. But I have no more information right now.”

Liverpool attacker drops to ground holding hamstring

As the first half went into injury time in the AFCON 2023 clash, Salah dropped to the ground and received medical attention, holding his hamstring. The 31-year-old removed the captain’s armband and handed it to a teammate before leaving with a worried look on his face.

When asked whether Liverpool would consider sending medical staff out to the Ivory Coast to treat the forward, Klopp responded: “We will see, that depends on the diagnosis. There will be an ultrasound and they will do an MRI and then we will know what it is and then we will see what Egypt plans. But it’s too early [to say], sorry.”

After the game, which ended 2-2, Salah was seen smiling as he left the stadium via the mixed zone.

Egypt coach Vitoria thinks Salah injury “not serious”

Speaking to the press post-match, Egypt head coach Rui Vitoria attempted to ease fears Salah had suffered a serious injury. “I hope it’s not a big problem. But it was a problem in the first half because we lost one window to make a substitution. In the second half, we only had two moments to make substitutions.

“Now I don’t know because it’s [too] early to see something. I think it’s not serious, but let’s see if Salah recovers.”

How many Premier League games has Salah missed with Liverpool?

With Egypt not assured of progressing to the knockout rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations and Liverpool hoping to fed off the challenge of Manchester City as they chase their first Premier League title since 2020, a potential layoff for Salah couldn’t come at a worse time.

As highlighted by The Athletic, Salah has only missed 10 Premier League matches in six and a half years. Both Egypt and Liverpool are hoping and praying a hamstring issue doesn’t lead to him having an uncharacteristic spell on the sidelines.
