What is Bayern Munich’s Champions League record? Thomas Tuchel’s side look to go second in the all-time rankings
The German giants have been crowned European champions twice in the past decade but now face a tough tie against Manchester City.
Manchester City host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash on Tuesday. The tie brings together two sides often cited as the best in Europe over recent seasons.
City and Bayern boast two of the most talented squads on the planet, but they have had greatly differing experiences in Europe’s elite club competition.
While Manchester City are still searching for their first Champions League trophy, Bayern can move into second place in the all-time rankings with another triumph this year. The German club has won the competition six times, behind only AC Milan (seven) and Real Madrid (14).
Since the turn of the century Bayern have been unerringly consistent in the Champions League, reaching the knock-out stages in all but two of the past 22 editions. With thanks to our friends at Sofascore, here’s how Bayern have performed…
Who has won the Champions League/European Cup the most times?
Ever since they won the first iteration of the competition in 1956, Real Madrid have been the club most synonymous with the European Cup. An incredible recent run of triumphs – five in the past nine seasons – has moved them to 14 wins, far ahead of the chasing pack.
Italian giants Milan are currently in second place with seven victories, ahead of Bayern Munich and Liverpool on six. Bayern and Real Madrid are the only sides to have won the competition in three consecutive seasons, a feat that the German side managed in the mid-1970s.
Last month Bayern sacked head coach Julien Nagelsmann despite the team’s faultless Champions League form, winning all eight of their games in this year’s tournament. However they did so to enlist the services of Thomas Tuchel, the man whose Chelsea side defeated Guardiola’s Manchester City in the 2021 final.
With either Real Madrid or Chelsea awaiting in the semi-final, Bayern have been dealt a very tough run to the final this year. However Tuchel is focused on securing another Champions League triumph to move Bayern into second place in the rankings.
“It is a major task in front of us,” Tuchel said ahead of the trip to City. “I was just outside [at Etihad Stadium] and that is the current gold standard for us.
“We want to live up to that but the team is entitled to be confident after our results and performances in the Champions League so far and we have to try to continue like that.
“Maybe we play in a role of slight underdog, which is not a problem. We’ll try to make the most of it. We need to be confident and on top of our game.”
