Club América, who face New England Revolution in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-finals, have a good record against Major League Soccer clubs.

The Mexicans have played a total of 34 games against MLS opposition, winning 20. Five have been drawn, and América have lost nine. Las Águilas have scored 66 goals in their fixtures against teams from the US and Canadian league, and have conceded 37.

What has the biggest América-MLS clash been?

América’s highest-profile match-up with an MLS team came in 2015, in the final of the Champions Cup’s predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Mexico City club beat Montreal Impact 5-2 on aggregate to secure their sixth CONCACAF crown, winning the away leg 4-2 after a 1-1 draw in the opener at the Estadio Azteca.

The victory was the first of two straight Champions League triumphs for Los Americanistas, whose all-time haul of seven regional titles is a record.

However, despite generally having the upper hand in clashes with MLS teams, América have endured painful defeats. In 2020, for example, they suffered semi-final heartbreak against Los Angeles FC, going down 3-1 in a single-elimination tie.

A Mexican was the match winner for LAFC, as Carlos Vela - a youth product of América’s arch rivals, Chivas Guadalajara - netted a double for the Black and Gold.

How did New England, América reach the quarter-finals?

América reached the last eight by knocking out Chivas in an exciting, all-Mexican round of 16 tie. André Jardine’s men were 3-0 winners in the first leg in Guadalajara, before surviving a major second-leg scare to advance.

Chivas threatened to turn the tie around at the Azteca, first-half goals by Cade Cowell and Ricardo Marín leaving Los Rojiblancos within touching distance of a sensational comeback. However, América then scored twice themselves to level the scores on the night, Alejandro Zendejas netting after an own goal by Alan Mozo.

Los Azulcremas finally won 5-3 on aggregate, after Roberto Alvarado had added a third for Chivas to give the visitors a 3-2 second-leg victory.

Meanwhile, New England Revolution also progressed after a thumping first-leg win. Tomás Chancalay scored twice as Caleb Porter’s side thrashed Costa Ricans Alajuelense 4-0 in the opener, before the Revolution made sure of qualification with a 1-1 draw in Alajuela.

Who could New England or América play in the semi-finals?

The winner of the quarter-final tie will move on to a semi-final against Costa Ricans Herediano or Mexicans Pachuca.
