CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP

Tigres are one step away from securing a place in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals. The Felinos held Columbus Crew to a 1-1 draw in Tuesday’s first leg - a match in which the locals went down to 10 men after Aiden Morris was handed a red card for a challenge on Fernando Gorriarán with 13 minutes left to play.

While the tie remains open, the Mexicans have a slight edge ahead of next week’s return as the away goal will count double if it ends goalless in the decider.

Tuesday’s match started well for Robert Siboldi’s men, André-Pierre Gignac headed the visitors ahead on 18 minutes, against the run of play. However, the Crew were back level just before the break when Diego Rossi rifled home to make it 1-1.

What do Tigres need to advance?

With the tie at 1-1, a 0-0 draw or a win by any margin will be enough for UANL to advance to the semi-finals. However, if the leg ends 1-1, and the aggregate score at 2-2- with both teams having an away goal, the tie will be decided in a penalty shootout.

Whoever makes it through to the next stage will face the winner of the other quarter final between Inter Miami and Monterrey, so there is a chance there could be a new edition of the Clásico Regio.

The second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter final between Tigres and the Columbus Crew will be played on Tuesday 9 April 2024 at Estadio Universitario kicking off at 18:45 hours local time in Nuevo León - 8:45 p.m. ET / 5:45 p.m. PT.
