We’re approaching the midway point of the 2026 World Cup qualifying competition in the CONMEBOL zone, where six guaranteed finals berths are on the line. What’s more, a seventh South American country will head into an intercontinental play-off for a World Cup spot.

Ten teams are in contention and after eight games, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay have impressed and are odds-on favourites to reach next year’s tournament, which is to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Five-time World Cup winners, Brazil have failed to impress to date in qualifying: with four defeats to their name in eight games, Dorival Júnior’s men sit in fifth place on ten points. As things stand, the Brazilians are in danger of missing out on the finals for the first time in their history.

Things are looking even less rosy for Chile. La Roja boast just one win in the eight matches to date in the qualification process, and will be looking to deliver a surprise against Brazil to kick-start a late push for a place at the World Cup.
