When will Marco Asensio return for PSG?

The Spaniard was left out of PSG’s squad to play in Reims this weekend.

Marco Asensio has fully recovered from the foot problem he has been suffering from since September, but was the main absentee from PSG’s squad to face Stade Reims on Saturday. Despite having been cleared for the game since last week, PSG boss Luis Enrique didn’t feel it was not the right time to give him a run-out.

Earlier, at a press conference, the Asturian coach praised the Spanish international, but gave no clues as to the exact date of his return to the pitch. “It’s my rule not to announce the squad before the players know it,” he said. An hour after the PSG coach’s public appearance, the club released the matchday squad, with Asensio the main absentee.

Injured with Spain

The former Real Madrid player suffered a foot injury during the Georgia-Spain game on 8 September. PSG, in a statement, first reported an estimated recovery time of one month, just after the international break in October. However, the deadline has been postponed and the winger is not ready, at least in Luis Enrique’s opinion, to compete at the highest level.

Since 8 September, Asensio has missed twelve games with PSG, including this Saturday’s game against Reims. He also missed the games against Nice, Dortmund (Champions League), Marseille, Clermont, Newcastle (Champions League), Rennes, Strasbourg, Brest, Montpellier and Milan (Champions League). That would be sixteen if you include the two matches with Spain in October - against Scotland and Norway - in which he was absent, and the ones he will miss in November after, as expected, not being called up by Luis de la Fuente earlier on Friday.

Strong start to life at PSG

Asensio, before the injury, was performing well, netting three times and providing an assist, scoring a goal every 117 minutes, and establishing himself as an important part of the PSG side just before the injury that has kept him sidelined for two months. After the international break, Les Parisiens face two big games, first against Monaco on 24 November and then against Newcastle in the Champions League on 28 November. It remains to be seen when the Spaniard will return to action at the Parc des Princes.
