Why do Liverpool and Atlético Madrid have home advantage in Champions League second leg?
Anfield has shown a very special power, but why would The Reds get the advantage over the quarterfinal tie?

Liverpool and Atlético Madrid both get to play the second leg of their Champions League ties at home. But they arrive there by somewhat different routes and, lucky for us, the new format makes that contrast easy to explain.
Liverpool’s advantage comes from the table
Liverpool finished third in the league phase, behind only Arsenal and Bayern. That ranking is crucial. In the earlier knockout rounds, higher-ranked teams are given the second leg at home. It is a direct reward, they say, for consistency across those eight games.
So Liverpool’s position is straightforward. They performed like one of the best teams in the competition, and Anfield becomes the stage for the decisive night because of it.
Atlético’s advantage comes from the bracket
Atlético Madrid finished much lower in the table, down in 14th. Under normal circumstances, that would not be enough to guarantee a second leg at home deep into the tournament.
But the knockout phase changes things.
By beating Tottenham Hotspur in the round of 16, a team that (somehow) finished higher in the standings, Atlético effectively inherit their place in the draw. That includes the right to host the second leg in the next round.
It is one of the quirks of the system. Results can override rankings once the bracket is in motion.
Why the home setting matters
Whether earned through the table or inherited through results, the advantage is the same. At Anfield, the atmosphere has long been tied to dramatic European turnarounds. At the Metropolitano, Atlético thrive on intensity and pressure, especially in knockout football.
It does not guarantee progression. But when everything comes down to one final night, both Liverpool and Atlético Madrid will have it on their terms.
