Why James Rodriguez might stay in Mexico and Liga MX after all

James Rodriguez’s next move remains unclear. What is certain is that he will not return to Leon for the upcoming tournament. His camp is fielding interest from several leagues as he looks to extend his career, and staying in Liga MX is still on the table.

According to Merlo, James has been floated to major Mexican clubs such as Pumas and Cruz Azul, along with multiple MLS teams. In Mexico, only Cruz Azul and the university side have the budget to meet the veteran’s salary expectations.

James open to Mexico and beyond

“We already know he is not staying with Leon. He is a free agent, and there has been talk that he could go to Pumas or to Cruz Azul. The reality is that he is being offered to many Liga MX clubs. Obviously, Cruz Azul and Pumas have the financial capacity to pay the kind of salary he is looking for. He is open to offers in Mexico and in other places,” Merlo said on his YouTube channel.

Plenty of inquiries, no concrete offers

For now, the conversations have not progressed beyond initial feelers from teams inside and outside Mexico. His future remains uncertain. There has also been talk of interest from Brazil’s top division, but nothing formal has emerged so far.
