AS USA

Arsenal hope to head into the 2022 World Cup break as Premier League leaders and travel to Wolverhampton looking for a 12th victory in 14 games in the competition this season. A win at Molineux would, at worst, maintain their two-point over Manchester City, who host Brentford earlier on Saturday. The hosts, who have appointed former Real Madrid and Spain boss Julen Lopetegui as their new manager, are also badly in need of the points, currently sitting in penultimate place in the standings, three points from safety.

Wolves vs Arsenal preview

New Wolves boss Lopetegui watching from the stands

Lopetegui has, perhaps wisely, decided that his first game in charge of the club will come after the World Cup break, which means interim boss Steve Davis will take the team for the last time. It would appear to be a thankless task for former Burnley defender Davis, who oversaw a 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Leeds United in midweek but has led Wolves to just four points from his six league games at the helm. The Wanderers have won only twice in 14 Premier League games this season and scored just eight times. Their efforts to improve on that statistic this weekend won’t be helped by the fact that Diego Costa is suspended. Pedro Neto, Chinquino, Sasa Kalajdzic and Jonny also miss out due to injury.

Arteta to make of host of changes for Wolves vs Arsenal

Things could not be more different for Arsenal, who have dropped only five points in the league this season. The Gunners suffered a home defeat to Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday but boss Mikel Arteta fielded a much-changed side and will undoubtedly make wholesale changes to name his first-choice XI. Central defender William Saliba is likely to be the only survivor from the cup line-up. The game will probably come too soon for right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu, although Ben White has been Arteta’s preferred pick in that position this season in any case. Attacking midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe remains on the sidelines with a groin problem.

Wolves vs Arsenal prediction

The league’s worst attack meets its best defence. With that in mind, a win-to-nil for the Gunners is surely the most likely outcome.

Prediction - Wolves 0-2 Arsenal
