Canada and South Africa make World Cup history

With Mexico having already qualified as Group A winners, it was South Africa who somewhat unexpectedly took the second qualification berth. Their surprise win over South Korea, coupled with El Tri’s triumph over Czechia, sent them to the knockout stage for the first time ever.

Despite losing 2-1 to Switzerland, Canada achieved that same feat, joining the Swiss in the round of 32. Bosnia and Herzegovina also qualified after a 3-1 win over Qatar. Although several group games are still to be played, the Dragons are assured of being one of the eight best third-placed finishers.

And in Group C, Brazil (3-0 against Scotland) and Morocco (4-2 against Haiti) both won to ensure they finish in the top two, in that order.

As well as Mexico, the United States, Germany, France, Norway, Argentina and Colombia had also already qualified.
